STEYTLERVILLE / WILLOWMORE: Game reserve and accommodation of note
The landscape is varied, and the topography includes rugged mountains with deep, plunging cliffs, ridges at the foothills and more rounded hills, valleys and deep ravines and plains. Dry rivers that flow only in the rainy season, traverse the farm. The lush vegetation includes patches of shrubs, bushes with denser riverine thicket and many mature trees along the banks of the dry rivers. This diverse landscape encompasses three converging biomes including valley bushveld, Karoo like scrubs’, and aloe`s. This supports a diversity of vegetation that in turn supports a wide variety of animal and game life as well as mammal species, various birds, reptiles and a host of nocturnal animals. This balanced, diverse habitat ensures a perfect balance in naturally available food for both browsers and grazers.
Plenty of the beautiful Shepherd- or Motopie trees (Boscia albitrunca), also known as ‘Witgat’ grow here. With its various shapes and sizes, and attractive dense, round or spreading crown, Shepherd trees thrive in this dry climate.
This array of wildlife and vegetation creates a feeling of being in the Bushveld, while in the middle of the Karoo, without the dangers of malaria or dangerous predators. Take in the sounds of the amazing birdlife, stalk the shy game, or just get immersed in the beauty of the stars in the vast, milky night skies while nocturnal calls in the bushes and trees create a mysterious atmosphere.
At present the variety of game like kudu (about 30), njala (7), springbuck (45) to the tiny steenbok and duiker, as well as bushpig roams the entire farm. Other smaller mammal species, such as bat-eared foxes, mongooses and aardvark also call this area home.
