SUTHERLAND: Relaxing getaway and livestock farm

Situated in a cul-de-sac close to the Sutherland/Williston gravel road, approximately 30 km north, en route to Williston, this farm offers breath-taking views and the security of the Karoo.

The topography consists mostly of high-lying mountains and hills, large plateaus, secluded valleys, slopes and, mostly in the south, typical Karoo plains. The Rhenoster river runs through the western boundary of the farm, flowing strongly after occasional rain upstream.

The fauna and flora are typical of this type of Karoo Highlands topography and natural vegetation, making this farm suitable for extensive livestock and/or game farming. It is currently being utilized as an Angora goat stud farm and Dorper sheep farm, but it would be equally suitable for game.

Vegetation and irrigation
Grazing is typical of winter rainfall Karoo veldt with shrubs, bushes, thicket, trees, and succulents that flourish after good winter rains. About 3 hectares are covered in quality river habitat with mainly common reed (fluitjiesriet) vegetation. This is excellent additional grazing.

An abundance of irrigation water is obtained from a borehole (45,000 litre / hour capacity) fitted with a submersible Eskom electric pump. This borehole supplies water to a large concrete reservoir. From the reservoir the lucerne fields are flooded or watered by sprinklers. About 3,6 hectares of the entire acreage is arable land, suitable for producing lucerne or fodder. Currently most of the arable acreage is planted with lucerne. About 0,5 hectare is planted with prickly pears and watered by solar pump from the borehole.

Accommodation facilities
The farm is a sought-after guest farm with various accommodation facilities. A modern country style main farmhouse and attached cottages/flats are all in good condition and various outbuildings supply accommodation. All three of the accommodation facilities has family rooms. The main house boasts 3 family bedrooms, a bathroom, large dining room and indoor barbeque, fully equipped kitchen, office, gym, and playroom (table tennis) and office. Wi-Fi and cell phone reception are available. Another cottage has 2 double bedrooms, a 3rd bedroom and the rooms share a bathroom. A fully equipped kitchen facilitates self-catering. Another cottage has 1 bedroom with bathroom.

A borehole fitted with a solar pump supplies domestic water to the houses.

On the banks of the river is a camping area with shared ablution facilities, with flush toilets as well as showers. Hot water is provided by a wood-burning ‘donkey’ water heater. Some of the stands are shaded, and braai facilities are available at all the stands. Another solar pump supplies water to the camping area. All of the water pumped by solar pumps is stored in elevated water tanks.

Farming infrastructure
Farming infrastructure includes a large storage shed with outbuildings, newly built stable for keeping 4 horses, Angora goat breeding shed, 1 large labourer cottage as well as 2 smaller cottages. Various small pens to keep livestock, as well as good facilities for handling sheep and Angora goats.

Due to the steep mountains and hills, which comprise approximately 80% of the acreage, some areas are not easily accessible. The mountains also divide the farm into a northern and southern section. To reach the southern section one must take a detour through a neighbouring farm.

There is a tough but stunning 4 x 4 track from the northern section of the farm, crossing to the southern section. The dark clear skies are ideal for astrophotography. There is 16 kilometers of hiking trails and challenging tracks for mountain biking on the plains, plateaus and mountainous areas.

Only sections of the perimeter fencing are jackal-proof. The farm is subdivided into 10 inner camps (2 of which are small camps at the river) with adequate drinking water from 8 boreholes, some of which are fitted with solar pumps. Various paddocks planted with lucerne, and two concrete reservoirs, are situated close to the house. Eskom is available.

The farm in its exclusive location offers safety and tranquillity. It emanates a great sense of closeness to nature and offers an ideal setting for a lifestyle getaway.
